July 1, 2009 Wed 6:30 PM
HARANA SA INTRAMUROS
A Concert Dinner event featuring guitar duet and solo performances by Florante Aguilar and acclaimed concert guitarist Michael Dadap.
Michael Dadap was Florante's teacher in New York City back in the 80s and was influential in shaping Florante's affinity with the Philippine harana, kundiman and folk music. This event marks the first time the master and apprentice will be playing together in public as a duo.
Featuring an all-Filipino repertoire for solo and two guitars including works by Buencamino, Molina, Abelardo, De Guzman, San Pedro and Cayabyab, as well as Florante's and Mr. Dadap's compositions and folksong arrangements.
The Intramuros Restaurant, with its elegant space and exquisite Filipino cuisine, is fast becoming a hub of major Filipino events in the Bay Area. Their dedicated music performance hall is an ideal setting for an evening of Philippine music set in an intimate and themed environment. Owner Barry Picazo is providing a menu specially designed for the evening.
Proceeds from this event will go towards the completion of Harana documentary film currently in post-production.

What is Lalawigan?
Lalawigan (Tagalog for province) is a brand new work written by composer/guitarist Florante Aguilar through a grant awarded by the San Francisco Arts Commission.
Set in 1898 in the province of Cavite, Lalawigan is a song cycle featuring uncelebrated characters in the history of Philippine uprising against Spain. Macario (played by multi-award winning Philippine actor Raymond Bagatsing), is inspired by the legendary rebel Macario Sakay. Isagani (Kyle de Ocera) is a fisherman who becomes a revolutionary spy by night, and Candida a.k.a. Didang (Kristine Sinajon) is a peasant woman who paid a terrible price for joining the revolution.
Lalawigan uses a contemporary musical style that is rooted in the Philippine traditional forms of the harana and kundiman.
What is a song cycle?
A song cycle is a group of songs that are performed in a sequence as a single entity. In the case of Lalawigan, songs are interconnected to form a complete story in a narrative style.
Is it a musical?
Lalawigan is not a musical. However, songs are sung in character, in period costumes, and using light props. One might think of it as a hybrid between a musical and a live concert.
